How Dementia/Alzheimer’s disease progresses
Science has proven that dementia is a progressive illness and the progress depends on each individual.
It is a known fact that, as a person, we are all unique and every person can experience dementia in different ways. The ways each individual experience dementia depends on different factors, from physical make-up to emotional resilience and the support available to them.
Midian Care believes that every person living with dementia should be treated with dignity and respect at all times, same as everyone else, and should not be excluded from any activities, amenities or services available because of their condition.
We recognise that dementia is an illness and that people living with dementia have specific needs that require a person centred approach and specific strategies to meet them.
As the condition progresses, Service Users living with dementia can present memory loss, language impairment, change in personality, self-neglect, disorientation, behaviour that challenges, restlessness, eating problems, incontinence, delusions and hallucinations, and mobility difficulties. They can develop symptoms that cause them significant distress leading to a great risk from personal injury to emotional or physical harm to themselves or other people around, as a result of their changing condition.
At Midian Care we properly assess every person living with dementia, to establish the likely factors that may generate, aggravate or improve such behavior and we ensure that all reasonable precautions are taken to provide and maintain working conditions which are safe, healthy and compliant with all statutory requirements and codes of organisation for our Service Users and staff.
Midian Care staff are trained to continuously observe and review any changes to Service User’s cognitive capacities, noting for example changes to their memory, vocabulary and use of language, attention span and concentration, observational and listening capabilities, mobility and orientation and problem solving abilities.
At Midian Care we strive to provide a high standard of service for people living with dementia as we do for all our other Service Users.
